Ambassador Douglas Gibson met Aung San Suu Kyi, Leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Myanmar

South African Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, Douglas Gibson, who is also accredited to Myanmar (Burma), met the Leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), Ms Aung San Suu Kyi following her release from house arrest. Ambassador Gibson travelled to Yangon to meet with Ms Aung San Suu Kyi on 30 November 2010.

During the meeting, Aung San Suu Kyi hailed South Africa’s great moral authority as an inspiration to those striving for democracy and expressed the hope that the people would take a leaf from South Africa’s book.

Ambassador Gibson reiterated the commitment made by Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim on behalf of the South African Government to share with the people of Myanmar South Africa’s experience on the path to reconciliation and transition to democracy.
