Request to the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation regarding four South African Citizens who went missing in Baghdad, Iraq

PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 7 OF 15 MARCH 2010

Mr. P J Groenewald (FF Plus) to ask the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation:

  1. Whether the Minister has received any request in respect of four South African citizens who went missing in Baghdad, Iraq; if so, when;

  2. whether any progress has been made in connection with this case; if so, what progress?

REPLY:

  1. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has been actively engaged for more than three years rendering consular support in a case of four South African abducted at Baghdad on 10 December 2006.  During the course of this protracted and complicated case numerous interactions with the wives of the four men and close family took place and are still taking place from time to time;

  2. No progress has been made as yet in determining the whereabouts or status of the four men and at no stage did the abductors contact or made demands of the South African Government.
