Deputy President Motlanthe to undertake Working Visit to Nordic Countries

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will undertake a tri-nation working visit to the Nordic Countries of Finland, Sweden and Denmark on 18 – 24 October 2011.

The objectives of the visit are to further strengthen political and economic relations with the Nordic Countries, to promote the African Agenda and share views on the reform of global governance institutions.

The visit will take place within the framework of the Declaration of Intent signed in 2008 between the Republic of South Africa and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden concerning partnerships in Africa.

The Nordic Countries supported, jointly with other nations, the struggle against Apartheid. Following the first democratic elections in 1994, the Nordics engagement was expanded to also include a comprehensive Development Assistance Programme.

As a result of South Africa's growing regional and international stature, internal stability and economic growth, the Nordics have been keen to explore ways to expand the existing relationship.  The Nordics also see South Africa as playing a key role in the development of its relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa.
