Message of condolences following earthquake in Eastern Turkey

The South African government has today, 23 October 2011, taken note of a devastating earthquake in eastern Turkey that is reported to have claimed many lives, leaving many more injured and property damaged.

On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma has sent his heartfelt condolences to the Government and the People of Turkey, particularly to the families that have lost loved ones.

President Zuma said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Turkish people during this difficult time of mourning.” South Africa and Turkey are strategic partners that enjoy strong political and economic relations.
