South African Government congratulates Zambian President-Elect Mr Michael Sata
The South African Government has noted the announcement by the Chief Justice of Zambia, Ernest Sakala in which President-elect Mr Michael Sata was announced a winner of the Presidential elections held on 20 September 2011.
The South African Government extends its sincere congratulations to President-elect, Mr Sata on his election. In this regard, the South African Government wishes to reaffirm its desire to further enhance its strong historical relations with Zambia.
Furthermore, the South African Government and its citizens reiterate its commitment to continue working with the Government and the people of Zambia for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
The South African Government also wishes to extend its appreciation and respect to all the candidates who participated in the elections, as well as to the sterling work carried out by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and all the institutions which have contributed to success of the democratic elections in Zambia.
South Africa has also taken note of the statements issued by the Election Observers, including SADC and AU Observers which declared that the elections met the criteria of being free, transparent and credible. This bodes well for the consolidation of democratic culture on the continent and in Zambia particularly.
South Africa is represented by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, at the Presidential inauguration scheduled to take place today, 23 September 2011.
