President Zuma congratulates Mr Mohamed Morsi on winning Egypt’s Presidential Election

On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has tonight, 24 June 2012, congratulated Mr Mohamed Morsi on winning Egypt’s first democratic elections.

President Zuma said: “South Africa welcomes the official announcement made today by Egypt’s electoral commission, declaring Mr Mohamed Morsi of the Freedom and Justice Party, as the winner of the presidential election.”

The President also said: “We would like to take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to Mr Morsi and the people of Egypt for a successful election.”

In this regard, the President stated that South Africa looks forward to working with the elected representatives of the Egyptian people. President Zuma also added that South Africa looks forward to Egypt taking its rightful place among the community of nations in Africa and globally.

The South African Government has offered to assist in Egypt’s reconciliation process, as well as the Constitution-building process.
