President Zuma congratulates Mr Mohammed Magarief on his appointment as Libya's President

On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has today, 09 August 2012, congratulated Mr Mohammed Magarief on being appointed President by Libya's National Assembly.

President Zuma said: “South Africa welcomes the announcement made by Libya's National Assembly, declaring Mr Mohammed Magarief of the National Front Party, as President of Libya following successful parliamentary elections."

In this regard, the President stated that South Africa looks forward to working with Mr Magarief and the elected representatives of the National Assembly which has been tasked with naming  a Prime Minister, pass laws and steer Libya to full parliamentary elections after a new Constitution is drafted next year.

South Africa remains ready to assist Libya in the process of democratic transformation.
