President Jacob Zuma congratulates Vice-President Joyce Banda for assuming Malawi’s Presidency

His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Malawi's Vice-President Joyce Banda for assuming the Presidency following the passing on of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

President Zuma said "We commend the Government and people of Malawi for upholding their country's constitution and ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition". The President also reiterated his call for all Malawians to continue to remain calm and maintain the peace during this time of bereavement.

President Banda, who will be Southern Africa’s first female Head of State, has declared an official 10 days of mourning for the late President Mutharika.
