Joint Communiqué at the end of the State Visit to the Republic of South Africa by President Hifikepunye Pohamba of the Republic of Namibia, 07 November 2012
1. At the invitation of the President of the Republic of South Africa, HE President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, the President of the Republic of Namibia, HE Hifikepunye Pohamba, paid a State Visit to South Africa from 5 to 7 November 2012. President Pohamba was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior Government Officials.
2. During their official talks, the two Presidents reviewed a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues. They expressed great satisfaction at the warm and fraternal relations that exist between the two countries and committed themselves to further enhance these historical and fraternal relations for the mutual benefit of their respective countries and peoples.
3. The two Presidents acknowledged the deepening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, mining, water supply, environment, tourism, agriculture, trade and investment, infrastructure development, education, transport, science and technology and defence and security. Co-operation in these areas is facilitated by the implementation of more than 64 sectoral agreements and memoranda of understanding which have been signed over the years between the two countries.
4. During the visit, the following legal instruments were signed:
- Agreement establishing the Bi-National Commission,
- Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on issues related to Public Works and Infrastructure Development,
- Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Meteorology
5. On regional issues, the two Presidents exchanged views on the prevailing political, economic and security situation in the SADC region. In this context, the two Presidents re-affirmed their commitment to work together in pursuit of the regional economic integration.
6. On continental and international issues, the two Presidents expressed their commitment to African unity and integration. They reiterated their common position on the need to reform the multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council and the Brettonwoods Institutions to better represent the interests of the developing countries.
7. H.E. President Pohamba was accorded the rare honour to address the South African National Assembly during which he expressed profound appreciation of the historical and fraternal relations between the fraternal peoples of Namibia and South Africa.
8. H.E President Pohamba visited the Robben Island where some of his compatriots were incarcerated during the struggle for national liberation of Namibia, together with their South African comrades.
9. H.E. President Pohamba expressed his gratitude to H.E President Zuma, the government and the people of the Republic of South Africa for the warm welcome and fraternal reception accorded to him and his delegation during the visit.
10. H.E President Pohamba extended an invitation to H.E. President Zuma to pay a state visit to Namibia. In this regard, H.E President Zuma accepted the invitation to visit Namibia in 2013 on a date to be mutually determined through diplomatic channel.
