Sentencing of South African citizen in Thailand

South African Embassy officials in Thailand have today, 18 June 2012, attended the final court appearance of Ms Nolubabalo Nobanda. Ms Nobanda was arrested in Thailand in December 2011 after cocaine was found hidden in her hair, styled in dreadlocks.

Ms Nobanda’s initial sentence was for 30 years, plus a THB 2 million fine. However, as a result of Ms Nobanda pleading guilty, and in view of this cooperation, the sentence was reduced to 15 years and a THB 1 million fine (+/- R 250 000-00). Should Ms Nobanda be unable to pay this fine, it will be converted to a maximum of two years added to her sentence.

The Embassy will continue to visit Ms Nobanda and render consular services to her and the other South Africans imprisoned in Thailand. Consular support is also extended to the family members of such prisoners.
