Deputy Minister Ebrahim to preside over UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East

International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim will on Tuesday, 24 January 2012, preside over a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York on the situation in the Middle East.

Deputy Minister Ebrahim will preside over the meeting in South Africa’s capacity as President of the UNSC for the month of January 2012.

The meeting is expected to focus on the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, as well as recent attempts to resuscitate the peace talks.

Wider Middle East issues, including the situation in Lebanon and Syria, will also be discussed.

The Council  will be briefed by the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mr Oscar Fernandez Taranco.
