President Zuma sends condolences to Former President Kaunda

His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has sent his deepest condolences to the First President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr Kenneth David Kaunda, following the passing away of Dr Kaunda’s wife, Mama Betty Kaunda on Tuesday 18 September 2012. Mama Kaunda passed away whilst in Harare, Zimbabwe.

President Zuma hailed Mama Kaunda as having played a prominent role in hosting South African freedom fighters during the apartheid era. President Zuma said: “As one of the pioneers and activists for women empowerment in post-colonial Africa, her contribution will forever be cherished by posterity.”

President Zuma added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Former President Kaunda, his family as well as with the people of Zambia as they mourn the departure of our sister and mother, Mama Betty.”
