SA Government remains hopeful regarding current developments in Prof Karabus’ case

The South African Government has today, 24 April 2013, learned of the current developments in the case of Prof. Cyril Karabus and calls on the media and the public to refrain from speculating on the outcome of the process.

There are currently intense engagements taking place on the imminent return of Prof. Karabus. In this regard, the South African Government, as well as the family and friends of Prof. Karabus remain very hopeful.

The South African Government will continue to monitor developments around the case, maintain diplomatic contact with the UAE authorities, Prof. Karabus, his family and legal team.

The Government of South Africa has since the beginning of this ordeal in August 2012 remained seized with the matter, providing extensive consular assistance Prof Karabus and his family. The South African Embassy staff in Abu Dhabi regularly visits and calls Prof Karabus.

Over the past few months, the South African Government has taken several actions to ensure a speedy resolution of the case. These included, but not limited to, regular interactions between the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE.

The South African Government reiterates its call for calm on this matter until the judicial process has been concluded.
