South African delegation to monitor elections in Kenya
South African officials and members of civil society will participate under the auspices of the African Union Election Observation Mission and various other accredited monitoring teams in monitoring the forthcoming general elections in the Republic of Kenya, scheduled for 04 March 2013.
The people of Kenya recently adopted a new Constitution that was passed in a largely peaceful and well-run referendum in August 2010. The new Kenyan Constitution depicts a united Kenya that is desired by all, and it acts as a bridge to heal the divisions of the past.
Stemming from the new Constitution, the Parliament of the Republic of Kenya has also passed new legislation on elections, political parties, ethics and leadership, the reform of the judiciary and the establishment of a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In July 2012, South Africa hosted a Study Tour by members of the IEBC on liaison between Political Parties and the Electoral Commission. During the study tour, experiences and best practices were shared in meetings with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa, Government, civil society and political parties.
Recalling the positive developments that have taken place in Kenya since 2007, the South African Government is confident that the elections in Kenya on 04 March 2013 will contribute to the consolidation of democracy.
The South African Government wishes the people of Kenya a successful, peaceful and democratic election.
