President Zuma sends words of solidarity to the Republic of Mauritius following floods
It is with sadness that President Jacob Zuma and the people of South Africa learnt of the devastation caused by torrential rains and subsequent heavy flooding that hit the Republic of Mauritius on 30 March 2013. Eleven deaths were confirmed, while some people were still missing. Many accidents were caused by the flooding of which the most notable involved more than fifteen vehicles.
In expressing his condolences to the people of Mauritius, President Zuma noted that the island-State is prone to natural disasters such as tropical storms and cyclones. He acknowledged that the conditions in the country make it much more difficult to take adequate preventative measures against the effects of climate change.
Having noted the severe damage and destruction to the island-state caused by the floods, South Africa, which has also had parts of its country affected by severe flooding as a result of the unusual weather patterns, stands in solidarity with His Excellency President Kailash Purryag and the people of the Republic of Mauritius during these challenging times and offers its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, while also wishing the injured a speedy recovery. It is hoped that the entire population of Mauritius will unify in responding to this disaster as they have done previously.
