Minister Nkoana-Mashabane participates in the Executive Council of the AU
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 23rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), scheduled for 22-23 May 2013.
The Executive Council Meeting, which is at Ministerial level, is taking place ahead of the AU Summit on 24-26 May 2013.
The theme of the Summit is "Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance", and will be dedicated to the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity/African Union.
The Summit will culminate in the adoption of the Proclamation of the 50th Anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity/African Union on 27 May 2013.
In this regard, the Executive Council Meeting will consider the draft text of the Proclamation before it is presented to the Assembly Heads of State and Government for adoption.
Other issues on the agenda of the Executive Council Meeting will be, amongst others, the draft budget for the 2014 financial year, the implementation of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa and the situation in Western Sahara, the Middle East and Palestine.
Candidatures to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child will also be discussed.
