President Zuma congratulates the Amir of the State of Qatar

President Jacob Zuma has today, 26 June 2013, on behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, congratulated His Highness Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who was appointed as the new Amir of the State of Qatar on 25 June 2013.

Shaikh Tamim, the Heir Apparent, became the Amir of Qatar following the abdication of his father, His Highness Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

President Zuma extended his congratulations and best wishes to both the outgoing and the incoming Amir. The President paid a visit to Qatar in January 2012 during which he held fruitful discussions with Shaikh Hamad.

President Zuma congratulated the outgoing Amir on leading Qatar to become one of the most prosperous nations in the world and extended his best wishes to Shaikh Tamim as he builds on the legacy of his father.

South Africa enjoys a strong and strategic relationship with Qatar. At the recently held Fourth Round of Bilateral Consultations in Doha, discussions were held on further consolidating investment and economic relations.
