QUESTION NO: 47 (CO51E)

PUBLISHED IN INTERNATIONAL QUESTION PAPER NO: 102013 OF 28 FEBRUARY 2013

Mr K A Sinclair (COPE-NC) to ask the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation:

Whether Minister will provide information regarding any progress made with the preparation for hosting the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa summit in Durban in March 2013; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

REPLY:

Yes, updates are regularly provided to Cabinet and the media. This will be done till the Summit takes place. Opinion pieces are placed nationally and internationally on a weekly basis.  An intensive multi-media campaign on all platforms has been launched.  Political principals deliver regular policy addresses which focus specifically or refer to BRICS, e.g. the speech by Minister Nkoana-Mashabane, on the occasion of the New Age Business Briefing on “South Africa’s role in BRICS and its benefits to job creation and the infrastructure drive in South Africa”.

We have also embarked on a massive roadshow across all 9 provinces in which we are explaining the role of BRICS and it's benefits to ordinary South Africans through Community Meetings. We have just returned from the Northern Cape and will be in the Western Cape on the 5th March 2012.  In addition over the past year this summit has been communicated in numerous other public engagements with business and institutes of higher learning.
