South Africa sends condolences to Colombia following a bus tragedy that claimed at least 32 lives

The South African Government sends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Government and the people of the Republic of Colombia following a tragic bus accident in the northern town of Fundacion on Sunday 18 May 2014.

Over 32 children aged 14 or under were killed after a bus taking them home from a church event caught fire.

The South African Government sends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the Government and the people of Colombia following the tragic loss of young lives and shares in the mourning of the families, the Government, as well as friends of the deceased.

South Africa and Colombia enjoy cordial relations as evidenced by regular high level engagements and structured meetings geared at consolidating and enhancing bilateral relations. In this regard, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Marius Fransman headed a high-level delegation to Colombia in September 2013, followed by a high-level Senior Officials delegation in March 2014.

Bilateral trade is growing and SA Imports from Colombia were valued at R456 million and Exports to Colombia stood at R331million in 2013. In Rand value, Colombia is South Africa’s 8th largest export partner in Latin America and the Caribbean and 7th in terms of imports.
