Minister Nkoana-Mashabane to participate in the SADC Council of Ministers Meeting in Victoria Falls

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will arrive later today in Victoria Falls, Republic of Zimbabwe, to take part in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers Meeting currently taking place on 14-15 August 2014.

The SADC Council of Ministers Meeting precedes the 34th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will take place on 17-18 August 2014 in Victoria Falls under the theme: “SADC Strategy for Economic Transformation: Leveraging the Region’s Diverse Resources for Sustainable Economic and Social Development through Beneficiation and Value Addition.”

The Council of Ministers oversees the functioning and development of SADC and ensures that policies are properly implemented. During the SADC Council of Ministers Meeting, a variety of matters will be considered for decision and noting. The Meeting will also examine the performance of SADC institutions and review overall implementation of the SADC’s socio-economic programmes.

President Zuma is expected to lead the South African delegation to the 34th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government.

The Republic of Zimbabwe will assume the position of Chair of SADC during the Summit.

South Africa is one of 15 Member States of SADC, which include Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

SADC is the primary vehicle used by the sub-region to promote balanced and equitable integration among its Member States, and to achieve sustainable development, allowing the region address the key challenge of unemployment and to eradicate poverty.
