QUESTION NO: 7 (CO29E) AS APPEARED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER 1-2014 OF 11 MARCH 2014

MR JR DE VILLIERS (DA-WC) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND COOPERATION:

(1) Whether any steps have been taken in respect of a certain person (name furnished); if not, why not; if so, what steps;

The Department through its Mission in Malabo has been rendering consular assistance to Mr Janse van Rensberg since his incarceration.  The family in South Africa has been updated of the developments of his case as and when they were available. The Mission in Malabo has been active in making sure that Mr Janse van Rensberg’s health is taken care of by requesting the authorities to provide him with medication as and when it was required. Following the intervention of the Mission, Mr Van Rensburg was released on 21 February 2014 but is not allowed to leave Equatorial Guinea until the mediation process between him and his business partner has been completed.

(2) whether the Government intends to make high-level representations to the government of Equatorial Guinea regarding the incarceration of the said person; if not, what is the position in this regard; if so, what are the relevant details?

Since Mr Janse van Rensberg has been released no high level representations are currently planned. The Department through the Mission in Malabo will monitor developments and the negotiations that are still underway between Mr Van Rensburg and his business partner.
