South African government statement on the terrorist attack that killed the Egyptian General Prosecutor, Mr Hisham Barakat on Monday, 29 June 2015 in Cairo, Egypt.

The South African Government joins the international community in condemning the killing of the Egyptian General Prosecutor Hisham Barakat in Cairo on Monday 29 June 2015. The South African government wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family and friends for the loss of their loved ones and speedy recovery to the injured.

We also condemn the attack in North Sinai during which the Egyptian security personnel were killed, with many more injured, including civilians. The thoughts of South Africans are with the people and the government of Egypt during these trying times.

The South African Government notes and welcomes the condemnation of these attacks by the various political and religious parties in Egypt. South Africa reaffirms its principled position that inclusive dialogue and negotiations is the only means to resolve political problems.

South Africa will continue to support regional and international efforts to address the scourge of terrorism in all its forms.
