Deputy Minister Landers undertakes an official visit to Madagascar

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr Luwellyn Landers, is undertaking an official visit to the Republic of Madagascar from today, 04 October 2015. The Deputy Minister will preside jointly with the Malagasy Foreign Minister Beatrice Atallah in a seminar on the theme: "Madagascar-South Africa relations, past, present and future.”

It is expected that the visit by Deputy Minister Landers will consolidate political and economic relations between the two countries through bilateral consultations with Minister Atallah. The two principals will also share views on the possible establishment of a Bilateral Mechanism between the two countries.

South Africa's bilateral relations with Madagascar are cordial. South Africa strongly supports national reconciliation in Madagascar, both from a bilateral point of view, as well as within the framework of South Africa’s former role as Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security.

South Africa and Madagascar enjoy sound bilateral economic relations. In 2014, total bilateral trade amounted to approximately R3 billion with South African exports totalling almost R1,7billion and imports amounting to approximately R1,4 billion, which has grown at a rapid pace over the last decade. To date, nine bilateral agreements have been signed, while 16 are under consideration.
