President Zuma welcomes the signing of the final peace agreement by the President of the Republic of South Sudan

On behalf of the Government of South Africa, His Excellency President Jacob Zuma wishes to congratulate His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit of the Republic of South Sudan on the signing of the final Peace Agreement on 26 August 2015. The signing of this peace agreement will see the conclusion of the end to the almost two-year conflict that has seized South Sudan.

South Africa would also like to congratulate the regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), on leading the negotiations and ensuring a peaceful outcome for the benefit of the people of South Sudan.

South Africa remains committed to its role, together with the Republic of Tanzania, in its involvement in the Intra-party dialogue as a parallel process to the IGAD mediation. The reunification of the SPLM ruling party remains an important component of ensuring the peace achieved today remains a lasting solution.

President Zuma said: “South Africa is also committed to contributing to the post-conflict reconstruction and development of South Sudan in ensuring sustainable political and economic development of the country is attained.”
