Deputy Minister Landers concludes official visit to Uruguay

International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers has today, 03 March 2015, concluded his Official Visit to Montevideo, Oriental Republic of Uruguay. 

The Deputy Minister presented a congratulatory letter from His Excellency President Zuma to the newly elected President of Uruguay, His Excellency Dr Tabare Vasquez, who was inaugurated on Sunday, 01 March 2015 in Montevideo. 

Deputy Minister Landers also paid a courtesy call to the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister Rodolfo Nin Novou. During the meeting, the Deputy Minister presented a congratulatory letter to Minister Novou, signed by Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. Minister Novou welcomed and thanked South Africa for sending a high level delegation to Uruguay. 

The Deputy Minister concluded his visit by having a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Deputy Minister Jose Luis Cancela. During the meeting, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Establishment of a Bilateral Consultation Mechanism between the Republic of South Africa and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. The MoU is important for the strengthening of bilateral relations between South Africa and Uruguay.

Uruguay looks towards South Africa as a gateway into Africa, with the country having only two Embassies on the continent, the other being in Cairo.
