South Africa joins the international community in condemning the terrorist attack in Afghanistan
The South African Government condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal killing of over 80 people and some 300 injured during an attack on a peaceful protest in Kabul on 23 July 2016. The Government of South Africa extends its sincere sympathies and deepest condolences to the Government and people of Afghanistan and the family of the deceased.
The South African Government has noted with serious concern that the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
South Africa reiterates its stance that terrorism in any form and from whichever quarter cannot be condoned. It also stands firm with the United Nations Security Council position that “terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation”.
South Africa’s foreign policy is driven by the vision to promote international peace and stability, and South Africa supports the Government and people of Afghanistan in their efforts to further promote democracy and political unity in the country. South Africa believes that no terrorist act can reverse the path that Afghanistan has taken towards promoting peace, democracy and stability in the country.
