President Zuma congratulates Mr Azali Assoumani as President-elect of the Union of Comoros
H. E. President Jacob Zuma, on behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa, congratulates President-elect Azali Assoumani on his election as President of the Union of the Comoros.
The announcement of the results marks an important milestone in the democratisation process in the Comoros since 2001 following the Fomboni Accord that South Africa brokered under the auspices of the then Organisation for African Unity (OAU). President Zuma also commended the rest of the leadership and the people of the Comoros for the calm and peaceful climate under which the elections were held, as expressed by both the African Union Commission and the United Nations Secretary-General.
President Zuma expressed his commitment to continue working closely with President-elect Assoumani to enhance the good bilateral relations which exist between the Republic of South Africa and the Union of Comoros.
