Minister Nkoana-Mashabane arrives in Venezuela to lead the SA delegation at the NAM Summit
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane arrived in the island of Margarita, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, on 15 September 2016, where she is leading the South African delegation at the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the NAM taking place under the theme “Peace, Sovereignty and Solidarity for Development”.
NAM Summits are held every three years, and the last summit was held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, in August 2012.
The President of Venezuela, His Excellency Nicolas Maduro, will be elected by acclamation as Chairperson of the XVII Summit.
The NAM, with 120 member countries, is the largest grouping of states outside the United Nations. The NAM represents the common interests and priorities of developing countries, working towards the restructuring of the global political and economic order.
On 18 September 2016, the Summit will conclude with the adoption of the Final Margarita Island Declaration.
