Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane concludes successful participation in the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, has concluded her successful participation in the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the NAM where she led the South African delegation. The summit was held under the theme “Peace, Sovereignty and Solidarity for Development” in Margarita Island, Venezuela, from 16 to 17 September 2016. NAM is the largest grouping of states outside the United Nations with 120 member countries representing the common interests and priorities of developing countries, working towards the restructuring of the global political and economic order.
The summit met at a time when countries of the South were facing interconnected global challenges, which included growing instability brought about by continued threats to peace and security; increased cases of terrorism; large-scale movements of refugees and migrants; and the negative effects of climate change, economic stagnation and underdevelopment.
South Africa continues to affirm its commitment to the NAM to meet and overcome the many global challenges. “Only through a unified voice and with solidarity will the NAM member states be able to realise the common goals of peace and prosperity and uphold the shared values and principles of those who created this Movement” said Minister Nkoana-Mashabane
During the summit, Minister Nkoana-Mashabane delivered a speech during which she reiterated South Africa's solidarity with the people of Palestine and Western Sahara as they continued their struggles for independence and freedom. The cause of Palestinian statehood has become our own.
