Former First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Dr Riek Machar, on a private visit to South Africa
The Former First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Dr Riek Machar, is currently in South Africa on a private visit for medical reasons. Consultations were held with the Government of South Sudan regarding the visit of Dr Riek Machar to South Africa.
Dr Riek Machar arrived on Wednesday, 12 October 2016 and his period of stay in the country is not known.
South Africa reiterates her commitment to continue to work with the Government and the people of South Sudan to achieve peace, stability and development. South Africa does this through her participation in the IGAD Plus mechanism as well as the inter-party political dialogue which is facilitated by both Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Cham Cha Mapinduzi of Tanzania.
