South Africa expresses concern over the situation in the Republic of Turkey
The South African Government notes with concern political developments in the Republic of Turkey, following the attempted coup by a faction of the military, which took place yesterday evening, Friday, 15 July 2016.
South Africa strongly condemns any attempt to seize power through unconstitutional means or the resolution of political disagreements through the use of force. This incident is a serious violation of Turkey’s constitution.
South Africa supports democracy and the rule of law and we are of the firm view that the will of the people must be respected.
The South African Government appeals to the people and all political leaders in the country to refrain from any violent activities that may further undermine peace, security and stability in the country. We urge all involved to adhere to non-violence, and to debate issues in a peaceful and inclusive manner.
