Whether the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has reimbursed South Africa the amount of R46 million spent during the Lesotho mediation efforts as promised during the SADC summit on 15 September 2014; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

REPLY:

  1. No. The SADC Council of Ministers held from 14 to 15 March 2016 was informed that the SADC Secretariat is in the process of verifying expenses incurred by participating Member States towards the SADC Politics, Defence and Security Observation Mission in Lesotho (SOMILES). Member States have until 30 June 2016 to submit documentation for verification of costs incurred towards SOMILES. The date of commencement of reimbursement is yet to be determined.
