Recognition by the South African Government of the current government of the Republic of Burundi

Mr S Mokgalapa (DA) to ask the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation:
(1) Whether the Government recognises the current government of the Republic of Burundi; if not, why not; if so:
(2) What is the Government’s position regarding the
(a) Political crisis that is unfolding in Burundi; and
(b) International Criminal Court’s preliminary investigation launched in April 2016 into human rights abuses in the Republic of Burundi?
REPLY:
(1) Yes. South Africa recognises the current Government of the Republic of Burundi as it is recognised by the AU and the international community.
(2)(a) South Africa is participating in processes to resolve the crisis in Burundi. For example, the EAC-led mediation process and the AU High-Level Initiative led by President Zuma. The key to resolve the crisis in Burundi is for the people of Burundi to engage in an inclusive political dialogue. South Africa fully supports the mediation efforts led by (EAC) President Museveni and former President Mkapa. South Africa remains ready and will continue to support the people of Burundi to achieve stability and development.
(2)(b) South Africa has taken note of the International Criminal Court (ICC) announcement of the opening of a preliminary probe into the violence in Burundi and believes that this is a matter between the Government of Burundi and the ICC.
