The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will co-host the 17th Annual Regional Seminar on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) from 5-8 September 2017. This year's seminar coincides with the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1977 Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions of 1949.

The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr L Landers, will deliver the keynote address on 05 September 2017.

The Seminar will bring together high level participants, diplomats and practitioners of IHL from Angola, Botswana, DRC, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to review the status of IHL implementation. Also attending the seminar will be representatives from the African Union Commission, Pan African Parliament and the SADC Secretariat.

The Seminar will provide participants with an opportunity not only to share best practices and experiences, but also to identify emerging trends and priorities and reflect on what this means for the region.
