South Africa appeals to Myanmar to address the situation of displaced citizens

The Government of the Republic of South Africa expresses its deep concern about the plight of over three hundred thousand Rohingya civilians who have fled their homes in Myanmar.

South Africa further supports the statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations who emphasized the responsibility of the Government of Myanmar to provide security to affected populations, and requested for humanitarian agencies to be granted access to affected communities in need of assistance and protection.

The South African Government urges all parties to halt the violence in order to avoid further human suffering.  In particular, the South African Government appeals to the Government of Myanmar to address the current situation in Rakhine state within the ambit of the law, upholding the rights of all those living within its borders.

The South African Government is mindful of the manifold challenges confronting the Government and the people of Myanmar and has full faith that the Government of Myanmar will continue its process of democratisation and political reform in order to deliver sustainable development, stability and to contribute to national reconciliation.
