Minister Nkoana-Mashabane hosts her Qatari counterpart

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will host her Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, on Friday, 10 March 2017, in Pretoria. The meeting follows the successful State Visit by President Jacob Zuma to the State of Qatar in May 2016.

The two ministers will review progress in SA-Qatar bilateral political and economic relations. Furthermore, the ministers are expected to discuss matters of strategic interest relating to regional and global security.

Total trade between South Africa and Qatar has increased from R4 billion in 2012 to SA R7 billion in 2016. Qatar has the world’s third largest conventional gas reserves and is also a top 15 oil exporting country. It is strategically located in the Strait of Hormuz in the Arabian Sea, which remains critical in relation to global energy security.

Qatar is also benefiting from sizable investments from South Africa, predominantly in the petrochemical sector.
