Public invited to nominate South Africans for the 2018 Ubuntu Awards

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) will host the fourth Annual Ubuntu Awards on Saturday, 10 February 2018, in Cape Town.

The Ubuntu Awards were launched in 2015 to celebrate South African citizens who play an active role in projecting a positive image of South Africa internationally through diligent service in their respective fields. South Africa prides itself on these global ambassadors.

On 18 July 2018, South Africa will commemorate 100 years since the birth of former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Plans are afoot to host centenary celebrations for the late international statesman and first President of a free and democratic South Africa. The Ubuntu Awards will therefore be held under the theme: Honouring Madiba: A Global Champion of Human Rights, Peace and Reconciliation.

All nominees for the Ubuntu Awards will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • created a favourable image for South Africa
  • engaged with, and influenced, the international public
  • made a sustainable and enduring impact
  • embodied the values of Integrity, Passion, Patriotism and Humility
  • celebrated and promoted African unity and diversity.

Categories include:

  • Ubuntu Economic Diplomacy Award (Africa)
  • Ubuntu Economic Diplomacy Award (Global)
  • Ubuntu Social Responsibility Award
  • Ubuntu Arts and Cultural Diplomacy Award (Veteran) – public vote
  • Ubuntu Arts and Cultural Diplomacy Award (Youth) – public vote
  • Ubuntu Sport Diplomacy Award
  • O. R. Tambo Lifetime Achievement in Diplomacy Award
  • O. R. Tambo Lifetime Achievement Award.

Winners will be determined by a panel of judges, except in the two categories that are open to a public nomination and vote. The public is therefore encouraged to nominate online on www.ubuntuawards.co.za. The nomination and voting process will culminate in an awards ceremony.
