Mr S Mokgalapa (DA) to ask the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation:

1. What actions did her Department take against South Africa’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Mr Obed Mlaba, after he failed state security vetting in August 2016;

2. Did her Department order any investigation into the allegations that the specified person abused his office to secure business deals for personal gain; if not, why not; if so what were the outcomes of such investigation? NW326E

REPLY:

1. In compliance with legal prescripts, the Department has requested the High Commissioner to make a representation on why he should not be recalled. He had appealed against the non-issue of his security clearance and the appeal is still pending.

2. Yes, an internal investigation into the allegations levelled against High Commissioner has been initiated and is ongoing.
