Commonwealth endorses Centenary Celebrations of Nelson Mandela
The 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) has endorsed South Africa’s centenary celebration of the country’s first democratically elected president, Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela by affirming that the Commonwealth “shares and is inspired by the values he espoused”.
The biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting which took place in London from 17-20 April 2018 also called on the international community “to use this centenary year to address the global challenges of poverty, inequality, discrimination and underdevelopment and to promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts globally”.
The South African delegation to CHOGM was led by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The President message was that South Africa is open for business. The well-received message was aimed at inviting investors to assist the country in growing the economy while creating much needed job opportunities particularly for young people as emphasized by CHOGM which recognized that there is a need to “invest in a systems approach to support young people, including through skills building, entrepreneurship, apprenticeships, and the need for better data to target interventions effectively.”
The R850 million investment by the United Kingdom into South Africa as agreed in a meeting between President Ramaphosa and UK Prime Minister May will contribute towards creation of a business and an investor friendly environment that will in turn attract foreign direct investment while yielding positive results for job creation.
