Minister Nkoana-Mashabane to attend AU meeting on migration in Rabat

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashahane is schedule to attend the African Union's (AU) Ministerial Conference on Migration, which will bring together AU Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, on 09 January 2018.

The main objective of the conference is to harmonise the vision for an "African Agenda on Migration", taking into consideration the following principles:

• Inclusiveness and responsibility sharing; • Human rights; • Migration and development; • Fighting irregular migration.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco was designated by the current Chair of the African Union, HE Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea, as the AU lead on the issue of migration. In pursuing this mandate, King Mohammed VI has already submitted a preliminary note to African Heads of State during the 29th AU Summit held in July 2017 defining his vision for an African Agenda on Migration, and is expected to submit a comprehensive document on the subject on the occasion of the forthcoming 30th AU Summit to be held at the end of January 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Ministerial Conference will serve as an important platform in developing a draft African Agenda on Migration for submission to the AU Heads of State and Government.

The AU is engaged in various initiatives related to the management of migration, in particular the development of a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM). A draft Common African Position has been endorsed at ministerial level for submission to the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government at the end of January 2018.

South Africa regards this Ministerial Conference on Migration as an important avenue for consolidating the Common African Position (CAP) on the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
