SA marks 25 years of diplomatic relations with four South East Asian nations

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) will host the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Africa and several South East Asian Countries by hosting a seminar and a culture and heritage exhibition on Monday, 19 November 2018.

South Africa maintains strong political relations with the four South East Asian countries; i.e. Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Formal diplomatic relations were established with Malaysia and Philippines in November 1993 and Thailand and Vietnam in December 1993.

The four countries are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional organization, which was formed in 1967 to promote cooperation and economic, political, security, military, educational and socio-cultural integration amongst its members and other Asian countries. Trade between South Africa and ASEAN is growing quickly. In 2017, total trade was worth R112 billion.
