South Africa sends condolences to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam following the passing of President Trần Đại Quang

The South African Government learned with shock of the untimely passing away of Mr Trần Đại Quang, the President of the Socialist Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

The relationship between South Africa and Vietnam is cordial, and goes back many years before the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in December 1993, to the Bandung Conference in 1955.  The Government of Vietnam was a strong supporter of the liberation struggle. This year South Africa and the Socialist Democratic Republic of Vietnam celebrate 25 years of Diplomatic relations.

Since the formal establishment of relations, a solid bilateral relationship has developed between South Africa and Vietnam, characterized by strong government-to-government relations that include bilateral and multilateral cooperation at various fields.

On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, the President conveys his condolences to the Vietnamese Government, People and the family of the late President Trần Đại Quang on his passing.
