South Africa’s Statement on current developments in the State of Palestine

The Government of South Africa reaffirms that in terms of globally accepted international law, the Israeli settlements are illegal.

Continued settlement building by Israel constitutes a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace and undermines the conditions for successful final status negotiations and for advancing the two-state solution through negotiations. The cessation of all Israeli settlement activity is essential for reversing the negative trends already created on the ground.

South Africa recalls United Nations Security Council resolution 2334 which, “reaffirms that the establishment by Israel of settlements in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, has no legal validity and constitutes a flagrant violation under international law and a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-State solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace”. The resolution 2334, “reiterates its demand that Israel immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and that it fully respects all of its legal obligations in this regard”.

South Africa urges Israel and all member states to respect Security Council Resolution 2334 and all other UN resolutions aimed at resolving the conflict.
