Government of the Republic of Burundi and the CNDD-FDD
(JEAN BOSCO), 21 August 2002
Negotiations aimed at obtaining a cease-fire agreement
between the Transitional Government of the Republic
of Burundi and the National Council for the Defence
of Democracy-Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD)
of Jean Bosco Ndayikengurukiye, are continuing today,
Wednesday (21 August 2002), in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Preliminary consultations with the two delegations
took place on Monday, 19 August 2002, and actual cease-fire
negotiations began on Tuesday, 20 August 2002.
The CNDD-FDD, and the Transitional Government have
committed themselves to the negotiations, and have also
reaffirmed their determination to work towards peace
and stability in Burundi.
We are satisfied with the progress made by the two
delegations thus far, and are optimistic that they will
find common ground, for the sake of the future of Burundi
and its people.
The facilitation is also continuing discussions with
the CNDD-FDD lead by Pierre Nkurunziza.
