It is important to know that when you apply for a passport, you must apply in person because:

  • The passport officer must be satisfied that your identity is legal and valid;
  • The passport officer must check that your photograph is a true image of yourself; and
  • Your fingerprints must be taken (for people who are aged 16 years or older) and checked against the National Population Register.

REQUIREMENTS

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS – Passport & Emergency Travel Certificate

Please note that the issuance od Temporary Passport was discontinued effective 01 September 20214

1) Ordinary Passport Applications

Ordinary South African Passport are issued by the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa to applicants who are 16 years and older. Ordinary Passport are valid for 10 years and is not renewable. South African citizen may apply for a passport if the current passport is about to expire, is almost full, has been damaged, lost or stolen or if the applicant’s forename and or surname has been amended. When the passport expires an application for the issuance of a new passport must be submitted.
An ordinary tourist passport contains 32 pages, but frequent travellers can opt to get a maxi tourist passport with 48 pages.

Requirements:

  • A duly completed passport application Form DHA-73
  • A completed determination of citizenship Form DHA-529
  • Original identity documents (original passport & ID) as well as photocopy thereof
  • 2x colour photographs that comply with the Passport and ID photograph specifications.

Below are photograph specifications.

    • Photographs must be 35mm in width and 45mm in length
    • A close-up of the head and top of the shoulders so that the face takes up 70% - 80% of the photograph
    • Of high quality with no ink marks, lines or creases, and not damaged
    • The photograph must show the applicant looking directly at the camera
    • Have appropriate brightness and contrast.

Payment of prescribed fee - ordinary passports: Php 1,945.00; Maxi passport Php 3885.00

2) Child Passport Applications for applicants under the age of 16

  • A duly completed passport application Form DHA-73
  • Your original identity document and a copy, or a birth certificate and copy thereof if under 16
  • If under 18 years, parental consent for issuing of the passport. Please see Tourist passports: persons under 16 for the requirements
  • A completed determination of citizenship Form DHA-529 when applying from abroad
  • Present any existing valid tourist passport or if you have lost your passport or it has been stolen and you are applying for a new passport, you must provide a loss of passport report (DHA-335 ) and confirmation that you reported the loss to the police
  • Two colour photographs that comply with the Passport and ID Photograph Specifications (NOT needed at smartcard offices as ID images are captured digitally)
  • Prescribed fee for the passport; Php 1,945.00.

 3) Emergency travel certificate

The Department of Home affairs has discontinued the issuance of Temporary passport since 01 September 2014 as citizens travelling abroad are refused entry into several countries when travelling on Temporary passports. Only an emergency travel certificate (ECT) will be issued when travelling on temporary circumstances of emergency travel purposes (e.g if passport is lost while abroad, death in the family) applicant to provide proof of emergency. ECTs are issued in a handwritten page form and is valid for a single travel return to South Africa.

ETCs can only be issued to applicants travelling to South African on emergency cases.

Requirements:

  • A duly completed passport application Form DHA-73
  • A completed determination of citizenship Form DHA-529
  • Original identity documents (original passport & ID) as well as photocopy thereof
  • 2x colour photographs that comply with the Passport and ID photograph specifications.

4) Letter of Confirmation: Marital Status

Letter of non-impediment i.e. confirmation of marital status is issued upon request to persons who are South African citizen and who require such a letter for the purpose of getting married.

Requirements:

  • Original identity documents (original passports & ID) as well as photocopy thereof. The applicant must apply personally.
  • Covering letters about why you need confirmation of your marital status
  • An application fee of PhP200.00.
