IMPORTANT NOTICE

The South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) is a mandatory digital customs system implemented as from Wednesday, 1 July 2026, by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). All travellers entering or leaving South Africa must submit an online declaration for goods, currency, and foreign-registered vehicles within 24 hours prior to travel.

Key Requirements

  • Who it applies to: All citizens, residents, and foreign nationals travelling by air, land, sea, or rail. Minors and infants must also be declared by a parent/guardian.
  • What to declare: Goods acquired abroad, items for repair/remodelling, commercial goods, and cash/bearer negotiable instruments exceeding R25 000.
  • Foreign vehicles: Travellers crossing borders with a foreign-registered vehicle must also use SATMS.

How to Submit Your Declaration

You will receive an electronic confirmation via email to show at customs. You can complete it using any of these channels:

Online Portal: Access the SARS Customs Online Traveller Declaration webpage, www.sars.gov.za/travellerdeclaration/.

  • Mobile Apps: Download the SA Traveller Management System App (available on Google Play, Apple App Store, and Huawei AppGallery) or use the SARS MobiApp.
  • At the Border: Scan-to-Declare QR codes are available at all ports of entry. Self-service terminals and customs officials are available to help if you haven't completed it in advance.
