Bilateral relations between South Africa and the Republic of Gabon are on a relatively sound footing since diplomatic relations was established in 1992. South Africa appreciates the support and solidarity provided by Gabon during the struggle for liberation and therefore committed to strengthen mutually beneficial relations to the benefit of both countries. Since the formal establishment of diplomatic relations, several High Level Political visits and delegations have taken place between the two countries, resulting in the signing of a number of cooperation agreements in various fields i.e. Agriculture, Education, Transport, Trade and Investment and Tourism.
Both Gabon and South Africa share similar culture and history of colonialism. Gabon is the first African country that former President Nelson Mandela visited following his release from prison. A school, namely the Lycée d’Application Nelson Mandela has been named after him. As an influential player in the region, South Africa also regards Gabon as an important and strategic partner within the AU and the multilateral context.
On the trade front, bilateral trade between South Africa and Gabon has shown a steady increase over the years. For example, in 2010 South African exports to Gabon was just over R300 million and increased to over R500 million in 2015. . In November 2021, South Africa exported ZAR 51.1M and imported ZAR 2.73M from Gabon, resulting in a positive trade balance of ZAR 48.4 M. There is substantial room for growth in South Africa’s exports to Gabon in this and other key areas. South African goods and services have penetrated Gabon (and other markets in the region) and variety of South African consumer goods are available. South African companies can make inroads into Gabon by supplying products such as machinery, vehicles, electrical goods and iron and steel products, consumer goods categories such as food and beverages and furniture, agriculture and fisheries sector. |
