SOUTH AFRICA AMENDS THE REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS TRAVELING TO THE COUNTRY

On 8 November 2019, the South African Ministry of Home Affairs amended the requirements for the entry of foreign minors.
From now on, if foreign minors travelling to South Africa travel with both parents, with one of their parents or with a person who is of legal age, they only have to carry a valid passport.

THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN MADRID HOSTED A SUCCESSFUL EVENT ON 14 OCTOBER 2019

 
     
 
     
   
 
 

The Mission in Madrid hosted highly successful 2017 Nelson Mandela International Day events in Madrid on 16 and 18 July 2017, being: (a) first edition launch of the of Nelson Mandela Marathon, (b) performance of the famous Mahotella Queens in Madrid as part Veranos de la Villa cultural festival, and (c) unveiling of Nelson Mandela Mural in Lavapies, Madrid as well as handover of 590 kg food parcels from El Corte Ingles department store to two major NGOs in Madrid, i.e. ACUDEVA and FACIAM. Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Ambassador Smuts Ngonyama presided over these events.

 
The Mission in Madrid commemorated the 2016 Nelson Mandela International Day on 18th and 20th July 2016 by engaging in three events in Spain, being: (a) official unveiling of Nelson Mandela Street in Getafe, (b) donation of food stuff from MAKRO supermarket to two Food Banks in Getafe and donation of food stuff from El Corte Inglés to the FACIAM-Foundation for the Homeless in Madrid, as well as (c) participation in a cultural and academic event commemorating the legacy of President Mandela organised by the Municipality of Tarragona, Catalonia and the Euro Africa Centre.

Ambassador Lulama Smuts Ngonyama, along with the Spanish Secretary of State for Investigation, Development and Innovation, Mrs Carmen Vela Olmo, presided over a highly successful Freedom Day Ceremony (including commemoration of South Africa’s Armed Forces Day) at the Madrid InterContinental Hotel on 27 April 2016, where approximately 300 guests, inclusive of major role players from the Spanish State, business sector, civil society, education and tourism sectors, South Africans living in Spain and friends of the Embassy, attended the event.

Ambassador Smuts Ngonyama presented his letters of credence in Paris on 19 October 2015 before H.E. President of France and Co-Prince of Andorra, Mr François Hollande, in his capacity as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Africa to the Principality of Andorra. On the same day around more than 20 other Ambassadors stationed in Madrid and accredited to Andorra also visited Paris to present their letters of credence before President Hollande. During the session Ambassador held official meetings with President Hollande as well as with Ambassadors from other countries such as the BRICS countries.

Ambassador Ngonyama delivered a trade and investment presentation about South Africa on 16 July 2015 to an audience of key business people during a breakfast session organized by the Kreab Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Agency in Madrid.

Ambassador Ngonyama delivered a trade and investment presentation about South Africa on 15 July 2015 in Barcelona to an audience of key business people belonging to the Barcelona Global Group. The session was organized by the Euro-Africa Centre and hosted by the Catalonia Europa Foundation.

Ambassador Smuts Ngonyama presented his letters of credence on 11 March 2015 before Spanish King Felipe VI as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of South Africa to the Kingdom of Spain. During their meeting, the King expressed Spain’s affinity (and that of his family) towards South Africa. He underscored the strategic importance of South Africa to Spain and that the country viewed South Africa as a “perfect gateway to the Sub-Saharan Africa”. They further underscored the need for South Africa and Spain to deepen their collaboration in the multilateral institutions.

During his official visit to Malaga Province from 09-10 June 2015, Ambassador Lulama Smuts Ngonyama presided over a successful Business Seminar, hosted by the Malaga Chamber of Commerce, where he informed the 12 participating major Spanish companies about trade and investment opportunities in South Africa and Southern Africa. He also held formal meetings with the Deputy Mayor and Economic Advisor of the City Council of Malaga as well as with the Director of the Technological Park of Malaga.

Head of Mission and the Mayor of Mostoles officiated in the ceremony to rename a public park in the Mostoles Municipality after Former President Mandela on 17 July 2015. The Embassy also celebrated the International Nelson Mandela Day by donating 5000 kg of food parcels from El Corte Inglés department store to the Mostoles soup kitchen and other four NGOs involved in community-based projects aimed at uplifting the lives of those in need.

The Head of Mission presided over a highly successful National Day ceremony on 16 June 2015, which was attended by around 300 guests from various sectors, including the Spanish Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ignacio Ybañéz Rubio.
