Tourism

Since the demise of apartheid, international tourist arrivals have surged, making tourism one of the fastest growing sectors. Our tourism industry is well-established with an exciting sector of emerging entrepreneurs. South Africa is a pioneer and global leader in responsible tourism.

The Global Competitiveness Index produced by the World Economic Forum ranked South Africa 49th amongst 140 countries and number 2 in Africa. The Mo Ibrahim Index on African Governance places us at number 4 amongst 54 countries on the continent and the Nation Brand Index places us at number 38 of 50 countries. What do these numbers mean? They mean that South Africa is a visible nation brand amongst the global community of nations.  This is something that all South Africans can be proud of since we are a relatively young democracy. SA is a globally competitive, exciting and worthwhile long-haul destination with diverse travel and tourism offerings.

South Africa is a very affordable destination for Malaysians. Currently 1 Malaysian Ringgit gets you 4 South African Rand - making goods and services very reasonably priced to Malaysians. Flights to South Africa are relatively expensive - but they are comparable to other similar long-haul destinations such as Australia and European destinations.

South Africa is a Muslim-friendly destination. We have a substantial Muslim population that include Malay descendants who were brought to South Africa by the Dutch colonists. A visit to Cape Town (BoKaap) and Durban is a must to experience ‘Malay’ and Muslim heritage sites. Muslim travellers to SA are spoilt for choice when it comes to halal certified hotels, game reserves; restaurants; shopping and other services that are found all over the country. We are also one of the top 5 halal producing countries – a major achievement for a non-Muslim country – and there is always high quality Halal certified food available. Places of worship for Muslim travellers are also numerous and conveniently located in and around tourist and local areas.

There is no question about South Africa’s pristine landscapes, blue-flag beaches and unique game reserves. South Africa is still the best place in the world to see the Big Five -African elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino. Then there are our modern, vibrant cities – an affordable shopper’s paradise, pulsing with all forms of cultural and artistic expression. There is everything you could possibly imagine on offer for visitors on a budget, families with children, tourists with special needs and risk-taking adventurers who can dive with sharks. For foodies there are 5 Star and Michelin Star restaurants to simple but delicious street food.
