Statement by the Group of African Ambassadors in Oslo
Oslo, 25 May 2024
The Group of African Ambassadors resident in Oslo commemorates, today, Africa Day, coinciding with the establishment of the African Union (formerly the Organization of African Unity) 61 years ago. Rooted in the struggle for independence, freedom and peace, this day is an opportunity to reflect on the past, the present, and the future of Africa.
On this significant occasion, we emphasize the importance of propelling forward the African integration project, along with the African State’s contribution towards fostering peace, security, and sustainable economic development both continentally and worldwide. We further highlight the African State’s efforts to offer African-led solutions to African crises, in collaboration with our international partners, notably Norway, as a key contributor to these joint initiatives across multiple sectors.
We reaffirm our commitment to the partnership between our African nations and Norway, renewed at the recent meeting of Nordic-African Foreign Minister Meeting held in Copenhagen. This event marked another milestone, as our leaders concurred on renewing our partnership for solidarity, peace, security, sustainable economic development, and prosperity for our citizens, fostering closer ties between Africa and the Nordic countries. This emphasizes our status as equal partners, with mutual commitments based on Trust, Respect, and Shared values, which we aspire to see embodied in the implementation of Norway's new strategy for Africa.
At the multilateral level, we advocate for increased African participation in global governance. In partnership with Norway, we emphasize the importance of reforming the United Nations Security Council to achieve this goal.
Under its 36th Ordinary Session in February 2023, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union declared 2024 the “Year of Education”, under the theme “Educate an Africa fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa” urging governments to “accelerate progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4)”. In this regard, we welcome all international efforts, particularly Norway’s, to achieve this goal.
May the African-Norwegian Strategic Partnership be blessed and flourish. |
